St. Marys Ohio history, includes gristmill which still stands.

The Hydraulic canal is still located on the east of the gristmill however it originally extended north of the power plant to other St Marys Ohio industry.

Within the gristmill the water turbine turned the mill stone which was used to grind grain.   The water left the hydraulic, lowered  within the turbine and drained into the Miami and Erie canal located on the opposite side of the building.

At the north end of the current hydraulic is the power plant, the last customer to purchase the surface water from the canal.

Picture to the right is from the north side of Spring Street displaying the hydraulic still flowing under building foundations within downtown St. Marys Ohio.

St. Marys Ohio history also includes the Canal Tumble just to the rear of the gristmill.  When water driven turbines from industry along the Hydraulic Canal were not in need of the excess water, it drained through the Tumble back into the Miami and Erie Canal.

Notice the Rail Road Trestle in the foreground which had been used to supply coal to the power plant.
